88 Drummers. 88 Minutes.

YouTube Preview Image

On Friday night, I got to experience a west-coast tradition: a drum circle in Los Angeles’ La Brea Tar Pits. The 88BoaDrums circle was big in every sense of the word: sponsored by Nike’s new sportswear line, the show featured 88 drummers playing on full drum kits for 88 minutes (beginning on 08/08/08 at 8:08 p.m.)

(Yes, someone in Nike’s marketing department has a unnatural and disturbing fetish with the number 8.)

The event was the kickoff for the Los Angeles Play City Training Camp YouthNoise ran Saturday and Sunday. More to come on the training camp soon, but it was basically a two-day social entrepreneurship training sesion for college students interested in developing programs that use sport to acheive social good.

In any case, great weekend, but only about 12 hours of sleep combined over the past three days, so only a short post today.

CGM: Day 4, the Ice Cream Problem

It’s Day 4 with the CGM and my questionable sensor actually seems to be working.

I have found it to be really amazing to watch the graphs of my blood sugar and how they differ depending on my food intake — always smooth, but with differing peaks and slopes.

Today’s challenge? The Diddy Riese ice cream sandwich I ate for lunch today. Usually I’m a pretty healthy eater, but after an early flight to LA and a late breakfast after getting into town, a scoop of cookies and cream squeezed between two freshly-baked cookies sounded like just what I needed.

I took an good amount of insulin for the carbs and even extended 60 percent of the bolus over the next hour and a half to try to deal with the ice cream.

But my blood sugar curve kept rising — for the next four hours! It’s finally on its way back down now, but the slow climb clearly illustrated how much fat was in the ice cream (and how far I really need to run to work it off). :(

I’m hoping that when I finally start to pull my CGM numbers off my pump that I can actually learn from all of these experiences (and mistakes) and come up with a dosing plan that can survive an attack of the Diddy.

Teachers’ Protest Not a Good Idea

By now, everyone should know that I’ve been an outspoken opponent of nearly $5 billion in proposed budget cuts to public education in California. While I support their frustration, a planned school-time walkout by teachers in Los Angeles is not a good idea.

On Friday, June 6, the teachers plan to demonstrate in front of their local school sites for the first hour of the school day, leaving students in the care of aides and administrators. Los Angeles Unified has gone to court to try to prevent them from doing so, citing the potential danger to students from being able to provide only minimal supervision.

In some schools–particularly those where we’re talking about 2,500+ kids–the teachers are inviting chaos, instead of finding a more responsible time to hold such a protest, such as the numerous after school rallies that have occurred up here in San Francisco.

Superintendent David Brewer III put it simply and clearly.

“We’re trying to send a very strong signal to Sacramento that these cuts are unacceptable,” he said. “We’re not questioning the message. We’re just questioning the method.”
