A Political Milestone for Facebook

Today, the Barack Obama campaign announced that the candidate has amassed a following of more than 1 million supporters on Facebook.

One million, four-hundred fifty-eight, to be exact.

To all of the political prognosticators who doubted the youth vote, let this just serve as one more piece of evidence that when given a voice, young people do care about politics.

We want to change our country for the better and we’re willing to put in the time and effort to make that change happen.

Look out Washington, D.C. A generational tidal wave is coming.

The Gays Are Getting Married

Today marks the first full day that the state of California no longer actively discriminates against gays and lesbians and allows them to enjoy the full rights and benefits of marriage.

Hats off to the groups that have been fighting for this recognition for years. Let’s hope the tide has finally turned and we can finally look at people in love as people in love–regardless of their sexuality.

In honor of the day, I ran across this YouTube gem:

350: The World’s Most Important Number

YouTube Preview Image

350.org is a new grassroots organizing campaign that launched today, focused on educating the world about the dangers of climate change and launching ordinary citizens worldwide into action.

Why 350? It represents the safe amount of carbon (in parts per million) our atmosphere–and our planet–can sustain.

Right now, we’re hovering at just shy of 400 and beginning to experience some of the beginning effects of global warming. No one’s sure how much more the earth’s fragile ecosystem can take, so it’s time to commit to action.

Need a better explanation? The animated video above makes it pretty easy to understand, without a single spoken word.

If you want to join in, head over to the 350.org site and sign up! While you’re at it, hit up the Alliance for Climate Protection’s We Can Solve It Campaign.

For Jon Warnow, Bill McKibben and the rest of the Step it Up 2007 team–who also advised us on the Right To Learn Campaign–congratulations! Keep up the great work!

Some Idiots in Texas…

I have a special place in my heart for Texas, having spent three years in Houston working in schools. I have a lot of friends still living in the Lone Star State and remember fondly many warm, summer days out next to the BBQ.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few idiots in Texas that often make it hard to defend the state. Evidently, many of them congregated at the Texas Republican Convention, where they proudly displayed their racism with these buttons:

These folks are a disgrace to Texans, a disgrace to Americans and, yes, a disgrace to Republicans too.

It’s going to be a long five months ignoring these profoundly ignorant types…
