Phoenix Lands on the Surface of Mars

Just before 5 p.m. tonight, NASA received word that the Phoenix spacecraft had successfully landed on the arctic surface of Mars.

After confirming that its solar panels, radio antennae and other equipment has deployed properly, the lander will begin a three-month exploration of the area for frozen water and other life-sustaining elements.

The initial pictures that have started coming back to Earth are fantastic–with more certainly to follow over the coming months.

Congratulations to the hard working scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Arizona on the success. Here’s to hoping for more interesting data to prompt an eventual human mission to the red planet.
